Stocks of principal field crops, July 31, 2022

Released: 2022-09-07

Total stocks of wheat, canola, barley, oats, dry peas and lentils were all down as of July 31 compared with the same period one year earlier. Lower stocks were largely the result of lower total supply for the 2021/2022 crop year, which was because of low production in 2021, which was caused by drought in Western Canada.

Because of lower total supply, grain movements decreased for most crops, with year-over-year movements of grain by rail falling roughly 40%. Generally, exports also decreased compared with the same period ending July 31 one year earlier because of constrained supply.

Wheat

Total stocks of wheat fell 38.3% year over year to 3.7 million tonnes as of July 31, largely because of lower total supplies (-30.8% to 28.4 million tonnes). Commercial stocks (-23.3% to 2.7 million tonnes) and on-farm stocks (-60.1% to 970 100 tonnes) were down. The decrease in total wheat stocks was driven by wheat excluding durum (-39.6% to 3.1 million tonnes), while durum wheat stocks fell 30.5% to 565 300 tonnes.

Deliveries of wheat fell 33.5% year over year to 21.1 million tonnes as of July 31, while exports fell 42.5% to 15.1 million tonnes.

Canola

Total stocks of canola decreased 50.7% to 874 600 tonnes, their lowest level for the period ending July 31 since 2013. The decrease was a result of lower on-farm stocks (-77.4% to 242 000 tonnes) and commercial stocks (-10.1% to 632 600 tonnes).

Lower total supply of canola for the 2021/2022 crop year (-32.1% to 15.6 million tonnes) heavily contributed to the decrease in total stocks. Tight supplies limited both deliveries of canola (-29.1% to 14.3 million tonnes) and total domestic disappearance (-11.1% to 9.5 million tonnes). Moreover, exports were less than half of what they were one year earlier, decreasing 50.3% to 5.3 million tonnes, their lowest level for this period ending July 31 since 2005.

Dry peas and lentils

Total stocks of dry peas dropped 31.1% year over year to 385 100 tonnes as of July 31. On-farm stocks (-31.5% to 200 000 tonnes) and commercial stocks (-30.8% to 185 100 tonnes) were down. Lower supply combined with lower demand for dry peas from major trading partners, such as China, resulted in a year-over-year decrease in exports, falling 46.7% to 1.9 million tonnes.

Stocks of lentils totalled 224 000 tonnes as of July 31, down 48.9% from the same date one year earlier, as on-farm stocks fell (-72.7% to 90 000 tonnes), offsetting higher commercial stocks (+24.1% to 134 000 tonnes). Exports for the period ending July 31 decreased 31.2% to 1.6 million tonnes.

Barley

For the second year in a row, barley stocks fell to their lowest level on record as of July 31, down 29.1% from the previous crop year to 504 100 tonnes. The decrease was attributable to lower on-farm stocks (-48.3% to 285 000 tonnes), offsetting higher commercial stocks (+37.1% to 219 100 tonnes).

Deliveries of barley off-farm decreased 22.6% to 4.0 million tonnes, while exports were down 39.1% year over year to 2.6 million tonnes. Barley used for feed fell 33.1% to 4.3 million tonnes, its lowest level on record, as short supply resulted in farmers switching to alternative feed sources.

Oats

Total stocks of oats were down 51.6% year over year to 317 500 tonnes as of July 31, on lower commercial stocks (-44.6% to 170 700 tonnes) and on-farm stocks (-57.9% to 146 800 tonnes).

Oat exports fell (-22.5% to 2.3 million tonnes), as did oats used for animal feed (-45.6% to 636 600 tonnes), mostly because of lower supplies.

  Note to readers

Data on stocks of principal field crops held on farms on July 31, 2022, came from the June Field Crop Survey, which surveyed approximately 25,000 Canadian farmers from May 13 to June 10. Final estimates of on-farm stocks are produced as part of a triannual supply and disposition exercise, which includes data related to commercial stocks as of July 31.

Data on commercial stocks of major crops in Western Canada originate from the Canadian Grain Commission. Data on commercial stocks of special crops originate from a survey of handlers and agents of special crops.

National supply and disposition tables for the major grains and special crops are published jointly with the current release on stock levels and are available online in data tables 32-10-0013-01 and 32-10-0015-01.

Stock data are subject to revision during the two years following their initial publication.

Stock data on corn for grain and soybeans as of August 31 will be available on October 6, 2022, which corresponds to the end of the crop-year cycle for these two crops.
