Infographic description

The title of the infographic is "Sharp decrease in divorce applications and granted divorces in the early months of the pandemic"

This is a line chart.

The x-axis shows the months January through December. The x-axis title is "month," with values ranging from January to December and increments of 1 month.

The y-axis shows the number of divorce applications and granted divorces, by month, for Canada. The y-axis title is "number of divorce applications and granted divorces, by month, Canada," with values ranging from 0 to 7,000 and increments of 1,000.

There are four series in this chart. The solid blue line represents the average number of divorce applications for the 2015-to-2019 period. The dotted blue line represents the number of divorce applications in 2020. The solid orange line represents the average number of granted divorces for the 2015-to-2019 period. The dotted orange line represents the number of granted divorces in 2020.

The monthly number of divorce applications filed with the courts declined markedly going from 5,586 in February 2020 to 1,743 in April 2020. However, by July 2020, the number of applications had recovered to a level similar to that of previous years (around 6,000 per month).

The number of divorces granted each month by the courts also fell at the beginning of the pandemic going from 4,743 in February 2020 to 1,983 in June 2020. However, unlike the number of applications, the number of divorces granted in December 2020 (4,770) had yet to return to the level of recent pre-pandemic years (a little over 5,000 each month).
