2022 will mark the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics  by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. These ten principles ensure that national statistical organizations, including Statistics Canada, operate with the same professional and scientific standards. National statistical organizations from across the globe are highlighting each of the ten principles leading up to the Conference of European Statisticians from June 20 to 22, 2022, where a special event will be held to celebrate the 30th anniversary.

Statistics Canada is leading the mini-campaign for the first principle, which focuses on relevance, impartiality, and equal access. This principle recognizes that official statistics provide an indispensable element in the information system of a democratic society, serving the government, the economy and the public with data about the economic, demographic, social and environmental situation. To this end, official statistics that meet the test of practical utility are to be compiled and made available on an impartial basis by official statistical agencies to honour citizens' entitlement to public information.
