The COVID-19 Risk/Reward Assessment Tool measures the risk of COVID-19 exposure by occupation, through the COVID-19 Risk Index based on job and worker characteristics. It also measures the importance of different sectors to the economy, including the size of employment (pre-pandemic), change in employment, or sector centrality (how important a sector is to the functioning of all other sectors in the economy). The tool can be used to help policymakers determine for which sectors, or which occupation groups within sectors, to implement or ease restrictions as the pandemic evolves.
The COVID-19 Risk/Reward Assessment Tool was developed in spring 2020 by academic researchers in Canada from the University of British Columbia and CIRANO (Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations). An updated version is now available at Statistics Canada through custom tabulation upon request.
