The public use microdata file for the 2018 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating is now available.

This survey is an important source of information on the behaviour of Canadians regarding donations, volunteer activities and participation. Today, Statistics Canada also releases a series of online tables on the topics of volunteering and charitable donations by various socioeconomic indicators.

  Note to readers

The survey included individuals aged 15 years and over living in private households in the 10 provinces.

A user guide and data dictionary are also available with the 2018 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating public use microdata file (PUMF).

PUMFs are files containing the responses of individual respondents to a survey that have been modified to ensure the anonymity of the respondents.

In General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating, charitable donations include all monetary donations reported by individuals, regardless of whether or not the donation resulted in a tax credit.
