A revised preliminary dataset on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported by provincial and territorial public health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. In addition, there is now an aggregated table that summarizes the information available in the dataset. The updated information covers the period from January 15 to May 13, 2020.
The dataset and table include information for 30,778 COVID-19 cases in Canada as of May 13, 2020. The data include detailed information received by PHAC from provincial and territorial public health authorities on the suspected source of exposure, as well as on the clinical course and outcome (e.g., hospitalization, intensive care admission and death). Data are also available by demographic characteristics, such as age group and sex.
Note to readers
Because the COVID-19 pandemic is rapidly evolving, these data are considered preliminary and are subject to change. The data published by Statistics Canada include only those cases for which detailed information was reported by provincial or territorial public health authorities to PHAC. These data may not match the total number of cases reported at the provincial and territorial levels. These are reported regularly by each jurisdiction and compiled by PHAC. The discrepancy in case numbers may be attributable to delays in reporting, and variability in reporting cut-offs. Hence, these data are a subset of the total of all reported cases in Canada.
Routine health outcome updates are not given uniformly across Canada. Therefore, the data may underestimate the number of hospitalizations, intensive care admissions and deaths.
As part of its continued commitment to provide Canadians with critical information during the COVID-19 pandemic, Statistics Canada partnered with PHAC to make preliminary information on the number of COVID-19 cases available to the public.
The table "Detailed preliminary information on confirmed cases of COVID-19 (revised), Public Health Agency of Canada" provides detailed information on suspected source of exposure, as well as on clinical course and outcome, such as hospitalization, intensive care admission and death. Data are also available by demographic characteristics, such as age group and sex.
The table "Preliminary information on confirmed cases of COVID-19: Four dimensions (aggregated data), Public Health Agency of Canada" provides aggregated national results on source of exposure, hospitalization status, intensive care admission status and health outcome, by age group and sex.
