End use of refined petroleum products, 2018

Total sales of refined petroleum products increased 4.9% from 96.8 million cubic metres in 2017 to 101.6 million cubic metres in 2018.

Sales by fuel type

Motor gasoline (47.8%) and diesel fuel (33.3%) made up the majority of sales of refined petroleum products in 2018. Sales of motor gasoline increased by 3.5% year over year to 48.7 million cubic metres, while sales of diesel fuel were up 5.1% to 33.9 million cubic metres.

Sales of aviation turbo fuel (kerosene) totalled 8.9 million cubic metres in 2018, up 10.8% from a year earlier. Sales of light fuel oil (heating oil) increased by 2.2% to 1.9 million cubic metres in 2018.

Sales to end-users

In 2018, refinery sales to gasoline stations accounted for 23.7% of all refined petroleum product sales, while road transportation accounted for 8.6% and air transportation for 8.2%.

Refineries sold 20.4 million cubic metres of motor gasoline and 3.6 million cubic metres of diesel fuel to gasoline stations in 2018.

Sales of all fuels to the road transportation industry increased to 8.7 million cubic metres in 2018, up 3.6% from 2017. Diesel fuel accounted for the bulk of the sales, amounting to 6.7 million cubic metres, up 4.3% from the previous year.

Refinery sales to the air transportation industry rose 11.0% to 8.3 million cubic metres in 2018.

Refinery sales include sales by establishments engaged in transforming crude petroleum into intermediate and end products classified to code 324, petroleum and coal product manufacturing, of the North American Industry Classification System (2012).
