Motor vehicle fuel sales, 2018
44.8 billion litres
Gross sales of gasoline for which road taxes were paid have been relatively steady in the last two years. In 2018, gross sales of gasoline declined by 0.4% to 44.8 billion litres following a 0.3% decrease in 2017. Gross sales of gasoline continued to decline nationally since the 2016 peak of 45.0 billion litres which was likely induced by the weakening of global crude oil prices.
Ontario had the largest increase in volume of gross sales of gasoline among the provinces adding 2.3% (+384.7 million litres), while Newfoundland and Labrador (-23.0% or -180.0 million litres) had the largest decline. Altogether, gross sales of gasoline increased in the territories, excluding the Northwest Territories (-7.5%).
The largest gross sales of gasoline were in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. In 2018, the combined share of gasoline consumption from these provinces stood at 84.4% of the total volume, similar to the proportion in 2017, driven by population concentration.
On a country-wide basis, the net sales of diesel oil increased to 18.3 billion litres, up 1.1% (+200.8 million litres), compared with the upsurge in 2017 of 6.1% (+1.0 billion litres). Most provinces recorded higher net sales of diesel oil, except for Newfoundland and Labrador (-43.4%), New Brunswick (-14.1%), Saskatchewan (-7.4%) and Manitoba (-1.2%). In the territories, Yukon (+11.8%) increased, while Nunavut (-45.3%) and the Northwest Territories (-3.3%) both declined.
In 2018, overall net sales of liquefied petroleum products increased by 28.6% (+98.1 million litres), mostly driven by the 143.8% rise in consumption in British Columbia. Most provinces and territories showed declining net sales of liquefied petroleum products, with New Brunswick (-54.7%) recording the largest drop.
