5.0%
(annual change)
The Investment Banking Services Price Index was up 5.0% in 2018, following a 12.0% increase in 2017.
The increase in 2018 was attributable to higher prices for services associated with corporate-issued equities and securities issued by income trusts, the former of which is the highest weighted product in the index. These increases were moderated by lower prices for debt securities by government issuers.
Note to readers
The Investment Banking Services Price Index (IBSPI) is an annual release. The index collects prices for underwriting activities that are used to measure price movements over time in the investment banking industry.
With each release, data for the previous year may have been revised. The index is not seasonally adjusted. Data are available at the Canada level only.
Changes to the IBSPI
With the release of the 2018 data, several changes have been introduced to increase the relevancy of the index.
The base year of the IBSPI has been updated to 2017=100. In addition, the series is available in a Laspeyres, Paasche and Fisher index. Data for all previous years may have been revised.
The basket of products used in the measurement of price change for investment banking services has been updated to include sub-sovereign government debt beginning with 2017 data.
