Monthly civil aviation statistics, April 2019

Released: 2019-06-27

The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 7.1 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in April, up 4.6% from April 2018 and continuing the upward year-over-year monthly trend that began in April 2014.

Traffic increased 5.1% year over year to 18.0 billion passenger-kilometres in April. Capacity rose 3.9% to 21.3 billion available seat-kilometres. This resulted in a higher passenger load factor in April (84.8%) compared with the same month a year earlier (83.8%), as the increase in demand for travel was stronger than the rise in capacity.

On average, each passenger travelled 2,554 kilometres, up 0.5% compared with April 2018.

The volume of turbo fuel consumed rose 5.1% to 641.2 million litres, while the number of flying hours increased 1.1% to 179,000.

Total operating revenue was up 8.1% from the same month a year earlier to $1.9 billion in April.

The average passenger trip length is obtained by dividing the number of passenger-kilometres by the number of passengers. Trips across Canada or across the globe are included in this calculation.

Data for September to November 2018 and for January to March 2019 have been revised.
