Annual telecommunications statistics, 2017 (final)
In 2017, operating revenues for the telecommunications industry rose 2.4% from the previous year to $62.4 billion. During the same period, operating expenses increased 2.5% to $48.8 billion. Overall, the industry generated a 21.7% operating profit margin.
Mobile services and Internet services accounted for 59.7% of industry revenues in 2017. In comparison, mobile services and Internet services accounted for 49.6% of industry revenues five years earlier, in 2012.
Revenues for Internet services increased by 7.5% to $11.3 billion in 2017, while mobile services revenues increased 5.4% to $26.0 billion.
Operating revenues for cable television services fell for the third consecutive year, down to $8.9 billion in 2017, accounting for 14.3% of industry revenues.
Local and access, long distance, and data and private line services all registered decreases in overall operating revenues.
