On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 0.3% to $6.2 billion in April 2019. Higher sales were reported in special food services (+4.2%) and limited-service restaurants (+0.1%). Sales decreased in drinking places (-1.8%) and full-service restaurants (-0.1%). Higher sales were reported in six of the provinces, with the greatest increases in dollar terms in Alberta (+1.1%), Ontario (+0.4%) and Nova Scotia (+2.2%). The largest decreases were in British Columbia (-0.1%) and Quebec (-0.1%).

Strong sales continue in the food services and drinking places subsector

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Unadjusted year-over-year sales were up in the food services and drinking places subsector, increasing 4.7% in April 2019 compared with April 2018. Sales in each of the following industry groups increased: limited service restaurants (+5.2%), full-service restaurants (+4.7%) and special food services (+4.2%). Sales fell slightly at drinking places (-0.1%) compared with the previous year. Sales increased in each of the provinces and territories, with the largest gains in dollar terms in Ontario (+3.6%), Quebec (+7.1%), British Columbia (+5.4%) and Alberta (+4.3%).

Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in April 2019 compared with April 2018 and prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were up 2.1% in the same period.
