Monthly civil aviation statistics, March 2019

Released: 2019-05-30

The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 7.7 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in March, up 3.5% from March 2018 and continuing the upward year-over-year monthly trend that began in April 2014. This followed a 5.3% gain in February 2019 and represented the smallest increase in 11 months.

Traffic increased 3.8% year over year to 19.9 billion passenger-kilometres in March. Capacity rose 3.6% to 23.4 billion available seat-kilometres. This resulted in a slightly higher passenger load factor in March (84.7%) compared with the same month a year earlier (84.5%), as the increase in demand for travel was stronger than the rise in capacity.

On average, each passenger travelled 2 582 kilometres, up 0.3% compared with March 2018.

The volume of turbo fuel consumed rose 3.3% to 693.9 million litres, while the number of flying hours increased 1.5% to 200,000.

Total operating revenue was up 5.0% from the same month a year earlier to $2.1 billion in March.

The Monthly Civil Aviation Survey covers all Canadian Level I air carriers: Air Canada (including Air Canada rouge), Air Transat, Jazz, Porter, Sunwing and WestJet (including Swoop, WestJet Encore and WestJet Link).

The average passenger trip length is obtained by dividing the number of passenger-kilometres by the number of passengers. Trips across Canada or across the globe are included in this calculation.
