The number of head office employees in Canada increased 0.3% from 2016 to 228,130 in 2017, while the number of head offices was virtually unchanged at 2,729.
Newfoundland and Labrador had the largest increase in head office employment, up 8.9% from 2016, while New Brunswick posted the largest decline (-4.3%).
Employment at head offices remained concentrated in Ontario (42.8%), Quebec (23.4%) and Alberta (16.4%)
The majority of employees working in head offices were located in census metropolitan areas (CMAs). Within the CMAs, Toronto had the largest number of head office employees (77,167), followed by Montréal (42,619), Calgary (29,068) and Vancouver (15,783).
Toronto also had the most head offices with 696, followed by Montréal (385), Vancouver (239) and Calgary (213).
Note to readers
Head offices include establishments and locations primarily engaged in providing general management and/or administrative support services to affiliated establishments. Their activities include corporate functions, such as strategic organizational planning, communications, tax planning, legal services, marketing, finance, human resource management and information technology services.
