The film, television, and video post-production industry reported $1.4 billion in total operating revenue in 2017, up 26.7% from 2015. Businesses in British Columbia (39.2%), Ontario (31.2%) and Quebec (29.1%) accounted for most of the revenue in 2017.
Visual effects and animation services for audiovisual works generated 59.0% of total industry sales in 2017, while 3D visual effects and animation services for audiovisual works added another 11.0%. Domestic clients accounted for 82.1% of total industry sales in 2017, up from 79.3% in 2015.
Total operating expenses rose 26.6% to $1.3 billion in 2017 compared with 2015. Salaries, wages, and benefits rose 36.4% to $716.5 million, accounting for more than half of total expenses.
Operating profit margins were largely unchanged from 2015 (10.1%) to 2017 (10.2%).
