Aircraft movement statistics: Small airports, August 2018
Take-offs and landings at 128 Canadian airports without air traffic control towers totalled 66,444 movements in August.
Ten airports accounted for 35.7% of the month's activity: Peterborough, Ontario (4,279 movements); Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador (2,752); Trois-Rivières, Quebec (2,723); Barrie–Orillia–Lake Simcoe Regional, Ontario (2,645); Red Lake, Ontario (2,067); Drummondville, Quebec (1,974); Dryden Regional, Ontario (1,898); Muskoka, Ontario (1,864); Comox, British Columbia (1,842); and Sherbrooke, Quebec (1,662).
Total aircraft movements for the 123 airports for which year-over-year comparisons were possible decreased 12.2%, from 74,964 in August 2017 to 65,801 in August 2018, as 71 airports reported fewer movements. The largest decreases were at Pickle Lake, Ontario (-2,043 movements) and Peterborough, Ontario (-1,900). Among those airports with increases, the largest growth was at Rimouski, Quebec (+685).
In August 2018, 109 airports reported 50,555 itinerant movements (flights from one airport to another), with Goose Bay (2,752 movements) and Red Lake (1,897) recording the largest numbers.
Meanwhile, 62 airports reported 13,322 local movements (flights that remain in the vicinity of the airport). Peterborough was the most active site with 3,766 take-offs and landings, representing 28.3% of the total local movements reported.

This survey collects data on itinerant and local aircraft movements at airports without a NAVCANADA Air Traffic Control Tower or a NAVCANADA Flight Service Station.
An aircraft movement is defined as a take-off, a landing, or a simulated approach by an aircraft.
Data for the same month in the previous year may have been revised.
Annual estimates are released each year.
The data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.
