Natural gas transmission pipelines received 538.7 million gigajoules of natural gas from fields, gathering systems and plants in June, up 6.2% from the same month in 2017. The vast majority of receipts were in Alberta (69.3%) and British Columbia (28.6%).
During the course of June, natural gas transmission and distribution systems delivered 196.1 million gigajoules to industrial consumers, 19.5 million gigajoules to residential consumers and 16.2 million gigajoules to commercial and institutional consumers.
Canadian distribution systems delivered $263.4 million worth of natural gas to residential consumers and $119.3 million worth of natural gas to commercial and institutional consumers in June.
Provincial deliveries
Alberta deliveries of natural gas amounted to 140.4 million gigajoules in June. The majority (93.6%) were delivered to the industrial sector, which accounted for over half (56.7%) of the natural gas consumed in Canada.
Meanwhile, natural gas transmission and distribution systems delivered 36.9 million gigajoules of natural gas in Ontario. The residential sector received 10.3 million gigajoules, representing 27.8% of deliveries in the province.
Inventories
In June, opening inventories of natural gas in Canadian facilities totalled 647.2 million gigajoules. During the month, inventories rose 10.8% to close at 717.1 million gigajoules. Inventories increased for the second consecutive month. Storage facilities build inventories during the warmer months in preparation for increased winter demand.
Exports and imports
Canada exported 252.5 million gigajoules of natural gas by pipeline to the United States in June, while imports from the United States totalled 53.1 million gigajoules.
Quarterly review
Transmission pipelines received 1.7 billion gigajoules of natural gas from fields and plants in the second quarter, up 5.3% from the same quarter in 2017.
Transmission and distribution systems delivered 846.2 million gigajoules of natural gas to Canadian consumers, up 12.8% from April to June 2017. Distribution systems accounted for 41.9% of these deliveries.
Pipelines exported 779.1 million gigajoules of natural gas to the United States in the second quarter, down 3.4% from the same quarter in 2017.

Definitions
Data on natural gas no longer correspond to marketable natural gas but represent natural gas from fields, gas-gathering systems and gas plants.
Natural gas deliveries (termed "sales" in releases prior to January 2016) include deliveries to industrial, commercial and institutional, and residential consumers.
Opening inventories correspond to inventories as of the first day of the reference month, while closing inventories correspond to inventories as of the last day of the reference month. For example, the reference period for the opening inventory in January was January 1, while the reference period for the closing inventory was January 31.
Pipeline fuel is used to power compressors to move gas through pipelines.
