The Frontier Counts are based on administrative data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). These data provide information on the number of border crossings of international travellers for both outbound travel (Canadian residents travelling abroad) and inbound travel (residents of other countries travelling to Canada).

In March 2017, the CBSA began introducing the electronic Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK) system at airports in Canada. The PIK system replaces the E-311 Declaration Cards that were completed manually by international travellers to Canada. Statistics Canada is implementing the integration of PIK data to improve the quality of Frontier Counts statistics.

The release schedule for the June 2018 Frontier Counts has been modified to account for the time needed to integrate these new data from CBSA for all previous months of 2018 into Statistics Canada's data systems and validate the results. As a result, the release of Frontier Counts for the June 2018 reference month has been rescheduled to September 10, 2018. Revisions to 2017 data will be completed at a later date.
