The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted on September 25, 2015, by the United Nations General Assembly. The 17 SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They cover a broad range of social and economic development issues, with a focus on the most vulnerable and a commitment that "no one will be left behind." In order to measure and monitor progress on the SDGs, high quality data and information are required. To do this, the government of Canada is launching the SDG data hub, hosted by Statistics Canada.

Since 2016, Statistics Canada has been an active member of the United Nations Inter-Agency and Expert Group for Sustainable Development Goal Indicators. Tasked with developing a Global Indicator Framework, this group created 244 global indicators, which have been universally endorsed by member states in the United Nations General Assembly.

The new SDG Data Hub has been developed as a one-stop online destination that will present Canadians with access to statistical indicators to help track Canada's progress in meeting its commitment to Agenda 2030.

The first release of the SDG Data Hub is the result of a partnership among several federal government departments. It presents statistics from many departments, agencies, international organizations, industry and academia. Because the development of global indicators is ongoing, the SDG Data Hub will be updated as new data and statistics become available.

Data will include indicators on health, education, income, agriculture, official development assistance, the economy and gender equality. Canada's statistics for the global indicators related to life on land, water and air are also included.

Users will find the most up-to-date information to track Canada's progress in achieving each of Agenda 2030's 17 goals and the global targets.

For example, for Goal 3—Good Health and Well-being—data show that the mortality rate related to unsafe water, sanitation or lack of hygiene declined from 2013 to 2014, while the mortality rate attributed to unintentional poisoning increased slightly.

According to data presented for Goal 5—Gender Equality—women spent 4.1 hours on unpaid work in an average 24-hour day in 2015, 60 minutes more than their male counterparts. Overall, both women and men spent less time on unpaid work in 2015 than they did in 2010, and the gap narrowed between men and women relative to time spent on unpaid work.

For Goal 12—Responsible Consumption and Production—data show that household energy consumption declined 2.0% from 2014 to 2015, while household water use fell 7.6% from 2011 to 2013.

Sustainable Development Goals

On January 1, 2016, the world officially began implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — the United Nations' transformative plan of action that addresses urgent global challenges over the next 15 years. The plan is based on 17 specific sustainable development goals.

The Sustainable Development Goals Data Hub is an example of how Statistics Canada supports the reporting on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. This release will be used in helping to measure the following goals:

  Note to readers

The Sustainable Development Goals Data Hub was announced in the 2018 federal budget. Statistics Canada continues to work with other government departments, Canadians and the private sector to expand coverage and access to data from numerous sources, including international organizations, and to lead the work to develop robust measures in Canada for the Global Indicator Framework for Sustainable Development.

Statistics Canada is interested in developing partnerships with other data producers. If you have sustainable development goals-related data and are interested in partnering with Statistics Canada as part of this project, please contact Cara Williams (statcan.sdg-odd.statcan@canada.ca).
