A snapshot of licensed cannabis producers, 2016
Statistics Canada conducted a survey of Canada's licensed cannabis producers in the fourth quarter of 2017 and in early 2018. Businesses in this industry are licensed by Health Canada. The survey collected information on production, inventories, revenues, expenses, employment and capital expenditures for 2015 and 2016. In some cases, more recent information was obtained from Canada Revenue Agency corporate income tax and payroll deduction records and from Health Canada regulatory data.
There were 55 licensed cannabis producers when the survey was conducted. The number has since risen to 102 and continues to increase each month. As of the end of 2017, the 55 producers had 2,399 employees. Production of dried cannabis was 80,535 kilograms in 2017, with 46,186 kilograms sold and 38,927 kilograms in the stock of inventories at the end of the year.
Revenue from the sale of cannabis products was $245,733,000 in 2016 and expenses were $302,820,000.
The 55 producers reported that 8.7 hectares of cultivation area were in active use in 2016 and about 10 times that amount (85.7 hectares) were available for production but not yet in active use. These producers were intending to invest $788.6 million in new structures, land, equipment and inventories in 2017, roughly doubling their stock of capital compared with the end of 2016.
Statistics Canada will soon collect information for 2017 and 2018 in order to provide a more current portrait of this rapidly changing industry. To obtain up-to-date information on the number of producers in Canada, consult the Cannabis Stats Hub or the Health Canada website.
