Gross sales of gasoline for which road taxes were paid dropped 2.4% in 2016 to 43.5 billion litres. This followed a 4.5% increase in 2015.
Gross sales of gasoline in Canada were down by 1,061.2 million litres in 2016. The province with the largest gain in volume was British Columbia (+289.0 million litres).
Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia, the four most populous provinces, continued to account for most of the total volume of gas sold. In 2016, their combined share of gasoline consumption was 83.6%.

Motor vehicle fuel sales data for 2015 have been revised.
The purpose of this survey is to collect data on gasoline and other petroleum fuels sold in Canada. Survey data are used by the Department of Finance for the calculation of fiscal equalization payments to the provinces pursuant to the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act and territorial financing for the territories.
Data aggregations are available for Canada and for all provinces and territories.
