Restoration of the 1971 enumeration area polygons for Canada's largest cities
Digitized 1971 enumeration area (EA) boundaries are now available for all 33 census metropolitan areas defined by the 2011 Census of Population.
The restored EA boundaries also include 1971 population and dwelling statistics. The areas covered by the restored EA polygons account for 62% of Canada's total population in 1971.
EAs are the smallest geographical unit for the release of 1971 Census statistics.
The purpose of the data set is to provide a historical geography in a digital format to be used for reference, mapping and time series analysis of Canada's largest cities.
Spatial files (ArcGIS®, file extension: .shp) and metadata can be downloaded from "Restoration of the 1971 enumeration area polygons for Canada's largest cities," which is part of the publication Environmental Statistics: Boundary Files (16-510-X).
The product can also be accessed from the Geographic products page of our website, under Boundary files.
These boundary files are accessible as a web service on the Government of Canada website Open Maps.
