Gain in US travellers to Canada by car

US travellers made 2.0 million trips to Canada in January, up 3.6% from December and the highest number for the month since 2007. Trips to Canada by car, which account for two-thirds of all trips by American residents, rose 4.8%, offsetting a 5.1% decline in December. Both Manitoba (+21.9%) and Saskatchewan (+11.6%) saw increases in US travellers in January, after declines in December that may have been related to severe weather conditions.

Increase in travellers from overseas countries

Travel to Canada by residents of overseas countries (countries other than the United States) reached a record high 559,000 trips in January, up 1.3% from December and 15.0% higher than January 2016. The 10 largest overseas travel markets saw increases in the number of travellers to Canada compared with the same month a year earlier. The largest gains were from the United Kingdom (+12,800) and China (+10,200).

Canadian travel to the US rises

Canadians made 3.6 million trips to the United States in January, up 7.2% from the previous month and the highest level in more than a year. Growth in January was mainly attributable to increases in both same-day car trips (+8.2%) and overnight car trips (+9.8%).

Canadian travel overseas reaches record high for January

Canadian residents made 1.0 million trips to overseas countries in January, down 0.7% from December. However, this was still a 3.4% increase over the same month in 2016 and the highest figure for the month of January since 1972.
