Released: 2016-08-03

The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Canada 2016 is now available. This new version replaces CIP Canada 2011.

CIP Canada 2016 is the departmental standard for classifying instructional programs according to field of study. CIP can also be used to classify institutions by programs offered, and students and graduates by programs studied.

For the 2016 update to CIP Canada, new illustrative examples were added to ensure the examples of educational programs in CIP Canada remain current. The structure, classes and titles were not changed, and are the same as those for CIP Canada 2011.

The CIP Canada 2016 update is the result of research and consultation conducted by Statistics Canada on Canadian instructional programs.

CIP Canada is based on the CIP that was originally developed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in the United States. CIP Canada 2016 is comparable with the CIP 2010 published by the NCES in the United States and facilitates a common approach to future classification revisions.

CIP Canada 2016 is being used by the 2016 Census to classify Canadians' highest certificates, diplomas or degrees obtained by field of study. Data on this topic will be released in November 2017.
