Survey and mapping service industries, which include geophysical and non-geophysical surveying and mapping, reported a combined $3.0 billion in operating revenue in 2014, up 0.6% from 2013.

In 2014, the industry group reported $2.6 billion in operating expenses, down 0.9% from the previous year. This resulted in a profit margin of 12.6%, up from 11.3% in 2013.

Alberta (54.7%) accounted for the largest share of operating revenue, followed by Ontario (13.8%), Quebec (11.1%) and British Columbia (10.4%).

The largest expense item—salaries, wages, commissions and benefits—represented 49.0% of total operating expenses. The cost of goods sold (9.1%) was the second largest expense item.

Sales to the business sector accounted for 74.3% of total sales in 2014. The remaining client base was split among individuals and households (10.0%), governments, not-for-profit organizations and public institutions (8.1%), and clients outside Canada (7.6%).

In 2014, 58.7% of industry sales came from surveying and mapping of the earth's surface (including the sea floor). Geophysical surveying services, characterized by locating and measuring the extent of sub-surface resources, accounted for 32.3% of the industry's sales, while the remaining 8.9% came from the provision of other goods and services, which includes Geographic Information System development and customization.
