Travel between Canada and other countries, January 2015

Canadian residents made 5.0 million trips abroad in January, down 3.2% from the previous month.

Travel by Canadians to the United States decreased 3.2% to 4.2 million trips. This was mainly the result of a 6.0% decline in same-day car travel to the United States.

Travel by Canadian residents to overseas countries decreased 2.9% to 889,000 trips.

In the other direction, travel to Canada from abroad was down 1.2% in January to 2.2 million trips.

United States residents made 1.7 million trips to Canada in January, down 1.4% compared with December. All transportation modes saw decreases.

Travel to Canada from overseas countries declined 0.4% to 439,000 trips.

A Canadian resident traveller is an international traveller from Canada who has travelled outside of Canada for a period of less than 12 months.

A non-resident traveller is an international traveller resident of a country other than Canada who is travelling to Canada for a period of less than 12 months.
