Canadians registered 431,861 new motor vehicles in the second quarter, declining 11.2% from the same period in 2021 but increasing 27.1% from the first quarter of 2022. Since 2017, the second quarter of each year has shown the highest number of new registrations, with the exception of 2020, when dealerships were closed for half of the second quarter due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the second quarter of 2022, registrations of new pickup trucks saw the only increase (+5.8%) from a year earlier among vehicle types. New registrations of vans (-29.7%), passenger cars (-23.4%), and multipurpose vehicles (-11.1%) all declined from the second quarter of 2021.
Decline in gasoline-powered vehicles offsets gains in zero-emission vehicles
Among fuel types, new registrations of gasoline-powered vehicles were the only vehicle type to decline, with 15.6% less than in the second quarter of 2021. In the second quarter of 2022, gasoline-powered vehicles represented 81.4% of total new motor vehicle registrations, down from 95.1% in the second quarter of 2017, the first year quarterly estimates are available.
In the second quarter of 2022, registrations of new diesel-powered (+14.9%) and hybrid electric (+5.2%) vehicles increased from the second quarter of 2021.
Zero-emission vehicle registrations nearly double since 2018
In the second quarter, 29,832 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were registered in Canada, slightly more than double the number registered in the second quarter of 2018 (14,879).
New ZEV registrations comprised 6.9% of new vehicles registered in the second quarter of 2022, increasing from 4.9% a year earlier. Within ZEVs, new registrations of battery-electric vehicles increased 34.6%, while new registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased 2.9% compared with the second quarter of 2021.
Provincially, the most new ZEVs (11,105) were registered in Quebec, representing 10.5% of total new registrations in the province. In British Columbia, 13.8% of new vehicles registered in the second quarter of 2022 were ZEVs, amounting to 7,097 new registrations. New ZEV registrations in Ontario comprised 5.6% of total new registrations, the highest percentage seen by the province.
More new ZEVs were registered in Prince Edward Island (+119.0%), Saskatchewan (+93.0%), New Brunswick (+74.4%) and Manitoba (+52.6%) in the second quarter of 2022 than a year earlier.
Zero-emission vehicles by subprovincial geography
Data for new ZEVs are also available by subprovincial geographies in the table New ZEV registrations, quarterly. In the second quarter, Montréal (6,149) was the census metropolitan area with the highest number of new ZEV registrations, followed by Toronto (5,587) and Vancouver (5,382).
Note to readers
Estimates for Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Alberta are currently unavailable because of contractual limitations of the existing data sharing agreement. However, they are included in the Canadian total.

Estimates for British Columbia include the territories.
