Issue on early learning and child care

Today, Statistics Canada released six articles on early learning and child care (ELCC) in Economic and Social Reports (ESR). The purpose of this edition is to highlight the breadth of information available on ELCC at Statistics Canada, information that is important to Canadians. These articles feature results from the 2019 and 2020 versions of the Survey on Early Learning and Child Care Arrangements, the 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, the 2016 Census of Canada, and multiple years of the Canadian Business Register.

This issue of ESR includes information that describes child care demand for children and families in different socioeconomic situations ("Patterns of participation in early learning and child care among families with potential socioeconomic disadvantages in Canada"); child care use during the COVID-19 pandemic ("Use of child care for children younger than six during COVID-19"); and use of child care for school-aged children ("Use of child care before and after school in Canada").

In addition, information about the supply of child care is reflected in three papers: a description of a pilot version of the Canadian Survey on the Provision of Child Care in Canada ("Canadian Survey on the Provision of Child Care Services"); a description of the child care workforce for those with Indigenous identity ("Indigenous and non-Indigenous early learning and child care workers in Canada"); and the status of child care businesses in Canada based on administrative data ("The early learning and child care industry in Canada: Business characteristics and industry gross domestic product").
