The Canadian natural gas pipeline transportation and distribution industry posted total operating revenues of $17.3 billion in 2018, up 1.8% compared with 2017. Total operating expenses decreased 2.5% from the previous year to $13.1 billion in 2018. As a result, the net revenue from operations was $4.2 billion.

Balance sheet: Higher assets

In 2018, Canadian natural gas pipeline companies reported total assets of $73.0 billion, up 2.6% compared with 2017. This higher value was the result of a 7.3% increase in fixed assets, which was partly offset by declines in investment and current assets.

  Note to readers

The Annual Natural Gas Financial Survey collects financial data on natural gas pipeline transportation and distribution systems operating in Canada. The survey collects income, expense and balance sheet information from Canadian companies primarily engaged in natural gas distribution (North American Industry Classification System code 221210) and pipeline transportation of natural gas (North American Industry Classification System code 486210).

Transportation pipelines include gathering pipelines and transmission pipelines. Gathering pipelines collect natural gas from fields and plants. The gathered gas is then fed into large transmission pipelines that deliver either to distribution systems or to industrial consumers, such as oil and gas producers or power plants. In Canada, transportation systems originate in the major gas-producing regions of British Columbia and Alberta.

Distribution systems are pipeline networks that deliver gas directly to residential, commercial and industrial consumers.

The Annual Natural Gas Financial Survey, formerly known as the Natural Gas Transport and Distribution Annual survey, was redesigned for reference year 2018. The redesign consisted of removing non-relevant questions to reduce respondent burden.

Data have been revised back to 2016 partly because of the questionnaire redesign and methodology improvements. The current estimates may not be comparable with estimates published prior to reference year 2016.

Data are available upon request.
