On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector rose 0.5% to $6.3 billion in November. Higher sales were reported in all of the following industry groups: full-service restaurants (+0.9%), limited-service restaurants (+0.1%), special food services (+0.7%) and drinking places (+0.9%).

Eight provinces reported higher sales, with the greatest contributors to the increase being Ontario (+0.7%), Quebec (+1.0%) and British Columbia (+0.6%). Lower receipts were reported in Saskatchewan (-1.9%) in November, negating all gains from October. Manitoba (-1.6%) reported declining sales for the second month in a row.

Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increase year over year

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Compared with November 2018, unadjusted sales for November 2019 were up 4.2% in the food services and drinking places subsector. Sales increased in each of the following industry groups: limited-service restaurants (+3.6%), full-service restaurants (+4.8%) and special food services (+6.7%). Sales at drinking places declined 2.3%.

Year-over-year sales increased in nine provinces, with Ontario (+2.8%) and Quebec (+9.3%) contributing to two-thirds of the total national increase. Alberta (+3.5%) and British Columbia (+2.7%) were the next-largest contributors to the national total. Saskatchewan (-1.9%) posted the only decline in November compared with last year.

Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in November 2019 compared with November 2018, and prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were up 1.9% in the same period.
