The Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) integrates data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada with other administrative files.

Today, Statistics Canada is releasing tax information for immigrants who were admitted to Canada between 1952 and 1973, and for immigrants and non-permanent residents who were admitted in 2017. A correction has been made to the intended destination variables for immigrants admitted in 2017 and for non-permanent resident permits issued in 2017.

The release of the 2018 IMDB "Changes in outcomes of immigrants and non-permanent residents, 2017," was initially announced in The Daily on December 16, 2019.

  Note to readers

The Longitudinal Immigration Database (IMDB) is a comprehensive data source that plays a key role in the understanding of the economic behaviour of immigrants and non-permanent residents. It is the only annual Canadian dataset that allows users to study the characteristics of immigrants to Canada at the time of admission, and the economic outcomes and regional mobility of immigrants over a period of more than 35 years.

The IMDB is the result of a partnership between Statistics Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and the provinces.

The IMDB combines IRCC administrative files on immigrant admissions and non-permanent resident permits with tax files from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). IRCC's administrative records contain extensive information on immigrants admitted to Canada since 1952. Tax records for 1982 and subsequent years are available for immigrant taxfilers.

For additional information regarding IMDB data coverage and data quality, users should refer to the Longitudinal Immigration Database Technical Report, 2018.

Note that the IMDB is updated annually. From year to year, there have been changes to data processing. Each annual update is independent.
