The Farm Input Price Index was down 0.3% in the third quarter.

The decrease was due to lower prices for general business costs (-1.5%) and machinery and motor vehicles (-1.1%). Lower prices for machinery fuel (-7.5%) accounted for most of the decline in input costs for machinery and motor vehicles.

Alberta (-1.0%) and Saskatchewan (-1.2%) contributed the most to the national decrease. Ontario (+0.9%), British Columbia (+0.6%) and Quebec (+0.4%) were the only provinces that registered increases.

Farm input prices were up 1.2% year over year, led by higher prices in crop production (+4.3%).

Compared with the third quarter of 2018, the index increased in six provinces. Ontario (+3.1%) contributed the most to the national increase, followed by Saskatchewan (+1.7%) and Manitoba (+2.2%).

The Farm Input Price Index is subject to an eight-quarter revision period after dissemination of a given quarter's data.
