As part of the Data Strategy Roadmap for the Federal Public Service, Statistics Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada have agreed to conduct a pilot test on the sharing of residential civic addresses with other government departments.

As part of our initial release, on July 2, 2019, a residential dwelling address test file was made available for six select census subdivisions in Canada. We are now releasing a national file.

The records being shared include only the basic elements of an address (apartment number, civic number, street name, municipality, province or territory and postal code). No other attributes are included and the records do not in any way disclose the identity and personal information of any of the residents of a dwelling.

Over the years, Statistics Canada has developed expertise in standardizing and verifying addresses. This includes, for example, usage and spelling of official street names, standardized representation of apartment units, and linking of the address to the proper municipality.

By sharing a test file containing this information, Statistics Canada is launching a collaboration that could significantly reduce duplication of work undertaken across government programs that rely on timely postal delivery to correct addresses, or that must assign addresses to proper geographic areas.

The list of residential dwelling addresses is available upon request. Statistics Canada welcomes feedback on this initiative and will continue to inform on it progress.
