The six Canadian Level I air carriers flew 8.3 million passengers on scheduled and charter services in August, down 2.2% from August 2018, marking the second consecutive monthly decline. There was a 1.3% decrease in July 2019.
Traffic fell 2.4% year over year to 23.5 billion passenger-kilometres in August. Capacity decreased 1.7% to 26.4 billion available seat-kilometres, the third consecutive monthly decline. These declines were due largely to the continued grounding of all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This resulted in a slightly lower passenger load factor in August (88.8%) compared with the same month a year earlier (89.4%), as the decrease in traffic was stronger than the decline in capacity.
On average, each passenger travelled 2,837 kilometres, down 0.2% compared with August 2018.
The volume of turbo fuel consumed edged down 0.3% to 791.0 million litres. The number of flying hours fell 5.1% to 206,000. August marked the fourth consecutive monthly decline in hours flown. These decreases were due largely to the MAX's grounding.
Total operating revenue was up 2.5% from the same month a year earlier to $2.7 billion in August, the smallest increase since February 2017.

The average passenger trip length is obtained by dividing the number of passenger-kilometres by the number of passengers. Trips across Canada and across the globe are included in this calculation.
Data in this monthly release are not seasonally adjusted.
