On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased 0.3% to $6.2 billion in August. Higher sales were reported in full-service restaurants (+0.4%) and limited-service restaurants (+0.4%), whereas sales in drinking places decreased 0.5%. Sales at special food services remained unchanged.

Three provinces reported increased sales. The largest increase in dollar terms was in Quebec (+1.4%), following decreases in the previous two months. Sales also rose in Ontario (+0.2%) and Saskatchewan (+0.9%). Sales decreased in seven provinces, but not enough to offset the increase in the two largest provinces. Alberta (-0.1%) and British Columbia (-0.1%) posted declines.

Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increase

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Unadjusted year-over-year sales in the food services and drinking places subsector were up 3.0% in August 2019 from August 2018. Sales in each of the following industry groups increased: full-service restaurants (+3.5%), limited-service restaurants (+2.5%) and special food services (+5.3%). Sales fell in drinking places (-2.8%) compared with one year earlier. Sales increased in each of the provinces and territories, with the largest gains in dollar terms being in Ontario (+3.3%), Quebec (+3.5%), Alberta (+3.0%) and British Columbia (+1.7%).

Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.7% from August 2018, and prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were up 1.0% in the same period.
