Sales in the food services and drinking places subsector declined 0.4% to $6.2 billion in July on a seasonally adjusted basis. Sales were down at limited-service restaurants (-0.6%), full-service restaurants (-0.4%) and drinking places (-1.4%), while sales increased at special food services (+1.3%).

Half of the provinces reported lower sales, with the largest decreases in dollar terms in Ontario (-0.6%), British Columbia (-1.0%) and Alberta (-0.5%). Sales increased in the other provinces, with the largest gain in Saskatchewan (+2.3%), following a sharp decline (-3.1%) in June.

Sales increase in the food services and drinking places subsector is primarily a result of higher prices

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Unadjusted sales for July 2019 were up 2.5% in the food services and drinking places subsector compared with July 2018, driven by higher prices. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food purchased from restaurants rose 2.6% year over year, while the CPI for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments increased 1.7%.

Sales were up at full-service restaurants (+2.4%), limited-service restaurants (+2.4%) and special food services (+4.4%), while sales declined at drinking places (-0.3%).

Sales increased in every province year over year, with Ontario (+3.3%) contributing to half of the total national increase. British Columbia (+2.2%) and Quebec (+1.7%) were the next largest contributors to the national total. Saskatchewan (+0.4%) posted the lowest year-over-year sales gain in July.
