On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector increased for the fourth consecutive month, up 1.0% to $6.3 billion in June. Higher sales were reported in full-service restaurants (+1.0%), limited-service restaurants (+0.9%), drinking places (+3.6%) and special food services (+0.2%). The higher sales coincided with the Toronto Raptors playing in and winning the NBA championship finals in the first half of June.

Seven provinces reported increased sales, with the greatest increases in dollar terms being in Ontario (+1.5%), Alberta (+1.8%) and British Columbia (+1.0%). Sales in Saskatchewan (-2.4%) were down for the third straight month. Following three consecutive monthly increases, Nova Scotia (-0.9%) also posted a decrease.

Sales in food services and drinking places subsector increase in second quarter of 2019

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Unadjusted sales were up in the food services and drinking places subsector, increasing 4.4% in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the second quarter of 2018. Sales increased in each of the industry groups: limited-service restaurants (+4.6%), full-service restaurants (+4.4%), special food services (+4.4%) and drinking places (+1.4%). Sales increased in each of the provinces, with the largest gains in dollar terms being in Ontario (+4.4%), Quebec (+5.7%), British Columbia (+4.1%) and Alberta (+3.1%). In percentage terms, sales increased the most in Prince Edward Island (+11.6%), while Newfoundland and Labrador (+0.6%) and Saskatchewan (+1.7%) posted the smallest gains in the second quarter.

Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the second quarter of 2018, and prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were up 1.8% in the same period. Similarly, prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 2.6% in June 2019 compared with June 2018, while prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments were up 1.7%.
