The Traveller Accommodation Services Price Index (TASPI) declined 3.9% in the first quarter. The index has decreased in the first quarter in 15 out of 18 years since its inception, as lower seasonal demand typically drives down accommodation prices in the fall and winter.

Both leisure (-3.7%) and business (-4.2%) clients paid lower prices in the first quarter.

Prices for traveller accommodation services were down in nine provinces and one territory. Lower prices in Ontario (-7.6%) and Quebec (-6.7%) contributed the most to the decrease. Higher accommodation prices in British Columbia (+1.0%), Nunavut (+1.8%) and the Northwest Territories (+0.6%) somewhat moderated the decline.

Leisure clients pay less in nine provinces and one territory

Prices for leisure clients were down 3.7% at the Canada level, largely due to lower prices in Ontario (-8.3%) and Quebec (-4.4%). Prices increased slightly in British Columbia (+0.6%), Nunavut (+3.0%) and the Northwest Territories (+0.7%).

Lower prices for business clients except in British Columbia and two territories

Prices paid by business clients decreased 4.2% at the Canada level. The decline was driven by lower prices in Ontario (-6.9%) and Quebec (-9.0%). Meanwhile, business clients paid higher prices in British Columbia (+1.8%), Nunavut (+0.9%) and the Northwest Territories (+0.5%).

Year-over-year change

The TASPI decreased 4.3% in the first quarter compared with the same quarter in 2018. Decreasing prices for both leisure (-4.6%) and business (-4.1%) clients contributed to the year-over-year decline.

Lower prices were reported in nine provinces and one territory, led by Ontario (-4.9%) and British Columbia (-5.0%). These declines were partially offset by higher prices in Prince Edward Island (+7.7%) and two territories, most notably Nunavut (+9.3%).

  Note to readers

The Traveller Accommodation Services Price Index measures the monthly and quarterly price movements of short-term accommodation services. This index reflects changes in room rates (excluding all taxes) and covers hotel and motel lodging services.

Separate index aggregations are available for Canada, the economic regions, provinces and territories, by major client group.

The contribution of a given sub-aggregate to the composite price change depends on both the price change exhibited by the sub-aggregate and on its importance in the basket, as measured by the weight.

The index is not subject to revision and is not seasonally adjusted.
