On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales in the food services and drinking places subsector decreased 0.3% to $6.1 billion in October. Lower receipts were reported in full-service restaurants (-0.8%) and special food services (-1.8%), while limited-service restaurants (+0.4%) and drinking places (+1.5%) reported higher sales.

Six provinces reported lower sales in October with the largest decreases in Ontario (-0.6%), Alberta (-0.4%), Manitoba (-0.9%) and Saskatchewan (-1.0%). The largest sales increases were in Quebec (+0.5%) and British Columbia (+0.1%).

Sales in food services and drinking places subsector increase in October

The figures in this section are based on unadjusted (that is, not seasonally adjusted) estimates.

Unadjusted sales in October were up in the food services and drinking places subsector, increasing 3.7% compared with October 2017. Sales increased at limited-service restaurants (+5.2%), full-service restaurants (+2.2%) and special food services (+5.6%) and edged down at drinking places (-0.1%). Sales increased in every province, with the largest gains in Ontario (+3.1%), Quebec (+5.1%) and British Columbia (+6.1%).

Prices for food purchased from restaurants were up 4.2% year over year in October, while prices for alcoholic beverages served in licensed establishments rose 3.2%.
