Natural gas transmission pipelines received 565.8 million gigajoules of natural gas from fields, gathering systems and plants in August, up 6.0% from the same month in 2017. The vast majority of receipts were in Alberta (69.6%) and British Columbia (28.2%).
In August, natural gas transmission and distribution systems delivered 216.3 million gigajoules to industrial consumers, 15.2 million gigajoules to residential consumers and 14.6 million gigajoules to commercial and institutional consumers.

Canadian distribution systems delivered $232.5 million worth of natural gas to residential consumers and $117.4 million worth of natural gas to commercial and institutional consumers in August.
Provincial deliveries
Alberta deliveries of natural gas totalled 147.4 million gigajoules in August. The vast majority (95.1%) were delivered to the industrial sector, which accounted for over half (57.0%) of the natural gas consumed in Canada.
Meanwhile, natural gas transmission and distribution systems delivered 45.8 million gigajoules of natural gas in Ontario. Of this total, 7.9 million gigajoules were delivered to the residential sector, which accounted for over half (52.0%) of deliveries to residential consumers in Canada.
Inventories
In August, opening inventories of natural gas in Canadian facilities totalled 769.5 million gigajoules. During the month, inventories rose 13.4% to close at 872.3 million gigajoules. Inventories increased for the fourth consecutive month as gas storage facilities continued to build inventories during the warmer months in preparation for increased winter demand.

Exports and imports
Canada exported 263.9 million gigajoules of natural gas by pipeline to the United States in August and imported 67.1 million gigajoules from the United States.

Note to readers
Definitions
As of reference month January 2016, the term marketable natural gas was replaced by the current term, natural gas from fields, gas-gathering systems and gas plants.
Natural gas deliveries (termed "sales" in releases prior to January 2016) include deliveries to industrial, commercial and institutional, and residential consumers.
Opening inventories correspond to inventories as of the first day of the reference month, while closing inventories correspond to inventories as of the last day of the reference month. For example, the reference period for the opening inventory in January was January 1, while the reference period for the closing inventory was January 31.
Pipeline fuel is used to power compressors to move gas through pipelines.
